This towering, straight-trunked tree dominates the open space to the south of the Kirkland Hall entry drive. This particular tree is one of the largest on campus. At a diameter of 104 cm (41 inches), it doesn't have quite the girth of its
slightly larger tulip-tree neighbor at the corner of Furman Hall, but it is considerably taller than the Furman tree.
In this example of a large tulip tree, notice the ridged
bark and
straight trunk typical of the species. You can see why it was favored by early European settlers for use in building log cabins.
