This small tree is at the corner of Cole Hall facing the entrance stairway of Rand/Sarratt.
Hop hornbeam
leaves are toothed on the margin and more even leaf bases than elms. The leaves look very similar to the
leaves of American hornbeam. These two trees can easily be distinguished by their bark. Hop hornbeam
bark tends to flake off.
American hornbeam bark is smooth, gray, and is fluted like muscles. Hop hornbeam
fruits are a cluster of inflated scales that look quite different from
American hornbeam fruits.
Hop hornbeam is a common tree in the woods of middle Tennessee.
This particular tree is described on
p. 61 of The Trees of Vanderbilt.
