This tree is located north of Alumni Hall, on the south side of the path leading from Alumni Lawn to Kirkland Hall.
Mockernut hickory leaves typically have 7 leaflets. The petiole (leaf stalk) is hairy, unlike many other hickories. It has stout twigs and relatively fat buds that are not yellow (as are bitternut hickory buds). The nuts are tasty, but require a lot of work to crack their hard shells.
Mockernut hickory is common in middle Tennessee, particularly on dry slopes. This may be the only example on Vanderbilt campus, however.
