Notes:
This is the largest of several pecan trees in the McTyeire Hall courtyard. In fact, it is the largest representative of its species in the arboretum and had a diameter of 98 cm (39 in.). It was featured on page 51 of The Trees of Vanderbilt book.
Pecans are part of the hickory genus Carya and can be found in the wild in the Nashville area, typically in moist bottomland forests. Pecan leaves have more leaflets than most other hickories, with the typical number ranging from eleven to seventeen. The edible nut is surrounded by a winged hull and it is considered to be one of the best tasting nuts of all of the hickories. For that reason, commercial varieties have been heavily selected to produce larger nuts.
