1.  Leaves with three leaflets and a strong, aromatic smell when crushed:
Rhus aromatica (fragrant sumac)

1. Leaves with many pinnate leaflets and no strong smell when crushed: go to 2






2.  Leaves shiny green with few teeth and winged rachis, fruits dark and drooping:
Rhus copallinum (winged sumac or shining sumac)

2. Leaves dull green with teeth and no winged rachis, fruits red and erect: go to 3







3. Twig densely hairy, underside of leaf with hairy midrib:
